5 Ways to Speed Up WordPress on Shared Hosting

You don't need a bigger server to get a faster site — most WordPress installs we audit waste half their load time on five fixable things. Here's the checklist our engineers run through first.

1. Turn on server-level caching

Every Cobaltway shared account includes LiteSpeed Cache. Activate the plugin, enable page cache and object cache, and most pages drop from two seconds to under half a second. Page-builder sites benefit the most.

2. Serve images in modern formats

Convert hero images and galleries to WebP or AVIF. A 1.2 MB JPEG banner typically becomes a 180 KB WebP file with no visible difference — and it loads six times faster on mobile connections.

3. Audit the plugin that phones home

One slow plugin — often a social feed or review widget making external calls — can add more delay than everything else combined.

Deactivate plugins one by one and measure with your browser's network tab. Replace live social feeds with cached snapshots that refresh hourly instead of on every visit.

4. Keep PHP and WordPress current

Each major PHP release runs measurably faster. Our control panel lets you switch PHP versions in one click and roll back just as fast if a theme complains.

5. Put a CDN in front of static files

Serving images, CSS, and scripts from edge locations near your visitors cuts round-trip time worldwide. Pair it with server caching and repeat visits feel instant.

Still slow after all five? That's the honest signal you've outgrown shared resources — read our shared vs VPS guide or ask support for a free performance review.
